High-level conference "Criminal justice response to radicalization"
19-10-2015 - European Commission - Charlemagne building - Brussels
Prisons are often referred to as a breeding ground for radicalization. The European Commission's communication "European Agenda on Security" of 28 April 2015 and the Council Conclusions on the Renewed European Union Internal Security Strategy 2015-2020 adopted on 16 June 2015 prioritize the prevention of radicalization in prisons, and the development of effective disengagement/de-radicalization programs.
The High-Level Conference, co-hosted by the European Commission and the Presidency of the Council of the EU, aims at allowing policy-makers, legal practitioners and experts to exchange views on effective interventions, management and sentencing practices to avoid the spread of radicalized ideas, inside and outside prisons in the European Union, which could lead to acts of terrorism. The expected outcome of the conference is a contribution to finding responses in the criminal justice sector on how to deal with this sensitive and complex problem.
