Strategy meeting 'Europeana for Smart Cities'

14-10-2015 / 15-10-2015 - Cercle Cité

The theme of this meeting will be the value of digital cultural heritage in creating Smart Cities in relation to cultural tourism and the creative industries.

Culture defines us, the way we live, the way we think, the way we communicate. The new trend in creating Smart Cities for the future should reflect our cultural heritage. We believe that cultural heritage has potentially a strong role in Smart Cities but as yet this is little recognised. In collaboration with the tourism sector and the creative industries we would like to explore what the opportunities are for our cultural heritage and create a set of actions to make them happen. Europeana invites you to share your ideas for using our cultural past to create the city of the future.

Smart Cities are booming. More people than ever before live in cities and make use of digital technologies in their daily lives. Urban governments around the world – in places like Amsterdam, Barcelona, Stockholm and Hamburg – are increasingly using ICT in innovative ways to optimise services, reduce costs, and engage with inhabitants in more interactive ways. The European Union stimulates these developments through Smart City initiatives and project funding.

However, Smart City policy and development mostly focus on areas like mobility, resource management, and government services. Cultural heritage has until now hardly figured on the agenda, despite the wide availability of openly licensed digital material.

The ‘Europeana for Smart Cities’ strategy meeting explores the potential value of Europe’s digital cultural heritage in creating Smart Cities and serving the needs of inhabitants and tourists. Culture policymakers, heritage professionals, creatives and tourism experts are invited to think, discuss and create together, to provide inspiring and actionable ideas for integrating cultural heritage into Smart Cities.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 14 & Thursday 15 October at the Cercle Cité, Place d’Armes BP 267, Luxembourg, with the help and co-organisation of Agence luxembourgeoise d'action culturelle asbl/Plurio.net. All presentations and group discussions will be hold in English.

Please note that this meeting is only for invites. If you have any question, please contact us at events@europeana.eu.
