On 18 and 19 July, the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) will meet in Mondorf-les-Bains in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The 17 major economies participating in the MEF are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States plus participating countries.
MEF is an initiative of the US State Department intended to facilitate a candid dialogue among major developed and developing economies, in order to achieve a successful outcome in climate negotiations. In view of the Climate Conference in December in Paris, four meetings of MEF will take place this year.
The meeting in Mondorf-les-Bains will be chaired by two key figures of the US government: Caroline Atkinson, Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and Todd Stern, Special Envoy for Climate Change at the State Department, the President’s chief climate negotiator. The members participating in MEF are represented by their ministers.
On a press conference which will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday 19 July in the Room “Symphonie” in the Domaine thermal in Mondorf-les-Bains, the two key figures of US climate change policies will inform about the outcome of this MEF session and the US expectations for the Paris climate talks in December.
