    Informal meeting of Ministers for Development Cooperation – Ministers stress the importance of development for world stability

    European Union (EU) Member State Ministers in charge of Development Cooperation met in Luxembourg on 9 and 10 December 2015 for an informal meeting marked by the closing of the European Year for Development 2015 (EYD). The negotiations underway at the Paris Climate Change Conference (COP 21), the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, as well as a discussion with NGOs were on the agenda of this meeting chaired by the Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Romain Schneider.

    Informal meeting of Ministers for Regional Development and ministers for Urban Policy – The need to bolster the regional cohesion of Europe at the heart of discussions

    The Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, chairedthe informal meetings of EU Ministers for Regional Planning and Urban Policy in Luxembourg on 26 and 27 November 2015, in the context of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU. The regional cohesion of Europe was a crucial point of discussion at the meetings. It means finding solutions to the very unequal development of European regions and cities over the past decades – a trend which has grown with the economic and financial crises, as François Bausch explained during the press conference that followed the meetings on 27 November 2015. In his view, one of the more glaring consequences of the loss of EU cohesion is the unequal response to the migration crises.

    In the context of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, will chair the Informal Ministerial Meetings on Territorial Cohesion and Urban Policy that will take place on 26 and 27 November 2015 in Luxembourg. Ministers will discuss on 26 November concrete actions to support territorial cohesion and their impact on overall growth and development. On 27 November, the Ministers responsible for Urban Policy will address how to support small and medium-sized cities as places of attraction and providers of essential services – from a general and a cross-border perspective.

    Informal Transport Council – The Ministers and Secretaries of State adopt a

    The European Union (EU) Ministers of Transport and Secretaries of State in charge of this competence met in Luxembourg on 7 October 2015 for an informal meeting devoted to cycling as a method of transport. Organised by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU, the meeting was chaired by the Luxembourg Minister of Transport, François Bausch. In particular, discussions concerned the effectiveness of bicycles as a method of transport and their social, ecological and economic impact in the EU. The participants, who were able to test different types of bicycles on a cycle route laid out inside the Conference Centre where the meeting was being held, adopted a declaration on cycling as a "climate friendly" transport mode.

    First informal meeting of Ministers for Employment of the eurozone - Discussions focus on strengthening the social dimension in EMU

    The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union held for the first time on 5 October 2015 an informal meetingwith the 19 Ministers for Employment and Social Affairs of the eurozone. The meeting took place before the EPSCO Council meeting in Luxembourg. The goal of the meeting was to hold discussions, based on a background note submitted by the Presidency, on strengthening the social dimension in the governance of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) which is facing increased social divergence, and to evaluate the added value of such a restricted meeting. The Minister for Labour, Nicolas Schmit, and the Minister for Social Security, Romain Schneider, chaired the informal meeting.

    EU Health Ministers met in Luxembourg on 24 and 25 September 2015 for an informal meeting devoted to dementia, healthcare for migrants and the impact of the cross-border healthcare directive on mobility and patients' rights, as well as the impact of trans fatty acids in foods.The Luxembourg Minister for Health, Lydia Mutsch, who chaired the meeting, highlighted during a press conference that dementia constitutes "a real socio-economic challenge, which seriously tests the viability of our healthcare systems and requires a multi-sectoral response".
