On 30 November 2015, Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Economy, invited Member States of the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA) to discuss cooperation between the two organisations. In its dual role as President of the Council of the European Union and Co-President, together with its Swiss counterpart, of the European Space Agency's Ministerial Council, Luxembourg is in a prime position to promote closer cooperation between the EU and the ESA. Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Economy, took the opportunity offered by this dual role to restart dialogue at European level and create fresh impetus with a view to increased cooperation between the EU and the European Space Agency.
The Minister for the Civil Service and Administrative Reform, Dan Kersch, opened the 8th European Quality Conference (8QC) on 1 October 2015 held at the University of Luxembourg, Belval. Convened by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 and 2 October 2015, in collaboration with the European Public Administration Network (EUPAN ) and the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), the conference focused on strengthening public administration capacity to cope with current and future challenges marked by economic crisis and consequent budgetary constraints.
On 17 and 18 September 2015, the 14th European Tourism Forum was held in Luxembourg, an event organised by the European Commission in the context of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union. For the 2015 edition of the European Tourism Forum, the speakers chose to focus on the important issues the tourism sector is facing today: digitalisation, promoting Europe through transnational and pan-European thematic products, skills and training and also streamlining the regulatory and administrative framework. Francine Closener, Secretary of State for Economy, delivered the welcoming remarks of the forum "intended to shape the future of European tourism".
Nicolas Schmit, the Minister in charge of relations with the European Parliament during the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU, has welcomed the "important" contributions and initiatives put forward by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, during his speech on the state of the Union before the European Parliament which met in plenary session on 9 September 2015. "It is time for courageous, innovative and exceptional action to be taken", declared Nicolas Schmit, speaking at the end of the debate which followed Jean-Claude Juncker's speech. In his address, Jean-Claude Juncker called, in particular, on the 28 EU Member States to reach an agreement on the Commission's proposal on the urgent relocation of 160,000 refugees during the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council (JHA) convened by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU for 14 September 2015.
As part of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Centre virtuel de la connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) has initiated the CVCE Europa Quiz: www.europaquiz.lu. Throughout the Presidency, from 3 July to 31 December 2015, those interested will have the opportunity to participate in the competition. Each day they will be asked a question on a Europe-related topic. A host of prizes are to be won!
Luxembourg will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the twelfth time in the second semester of 2015. The Luxembourg Presidency will hold 237 meetings between July and December 2015, including 21 ministerial meetings. There will be 67 meetings in September alone! In total, there are 26,816 participants and 6,875 delegations expected at 37 different sites across the country.
