    25 years of Interreg - Call to further develop border regions and to reduce administrative obstacles

    The Luxembourg Presidency organised a conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Interreg programme held on 15 and 16 September 2015 in Esch-Belval. The event allowed thirty speakers to review the history of Interreg and to present several examples of cross-border cooperation. Several of them stressed the importance of exchanging statistical data and reducing the administrative burden in order to improve the attractiveness of the programme.

    On the 30th anniversary of the first action taken in the fight against cancer, an official ceremony, entitled "30 years of EU action against cancer" and organised jointly by the European Commission and the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU, was held in Luxembourg on 15 September 2015. This event, attended by the Minister for Health, Lydia Mutsch, and the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, provided an opportunity for numerous invited specialists to assess the successes achieved and to debate the future action to be taken within this context.

    Lydia Mutsch has presented an EU declaration during the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) 59th General Conference in Vienna

    During the IAEA's 59th General Conference, which is taking place at the organisation's headquarters in Vienna between 14 and 18 September, 2015, the 164 Member States will discuss the big issues linked to the use of nuclear energy and principally those related to non-proliferation. Within the context of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch, presented an EU declaration.

    Opening of the Conference on EU Citizenship and Justice, organised by the Luxembourg Presidency – Justice Minister Félix Braz states his position on the refugee crisis

    The Luxembourg Presidency is organising a conference on "EU Citizenship and Justice", on 14 and 15 September 2015. The meeting, which will be held at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), closes a round of conferences on the theme of the CJEU in the area of freedoms, security and justice organised by the Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg trio of Presidencies. Luxembourg's Minster for Justice, Félix Braz, spoke during the opening of the conference in Luxembourg, and stated his position on the refugee crisis.

    Conference on Early Childhood Education organised by the Luxembourg Presidency - Day 2 devoted to multilingualism, the role of parents and teachers' working conditions

    The Luxembourg Presidency organised a conference on Diversity and Multilingualism in Education and Early Childhood Care held on 10 and 11 September, 2015. Throughout the second day, there was a presentation of the results of several workshops, followed by a discussion with a panel of experts. Several topics were covered, such as the need to value and foster the mother tongue of children from migrant backgrounds, improving the working conditions of teachers, and even including parents more in their children's education.

    The importance of quality education and equality of opportunities is at the heart of a conference on early childhood organised by the Luxembourg Presidency

    The Luxembourg Presidency organised a conference on Diversity and Multilingualism in Early Childhood Education and Care held on 10 and 11 September 2015. During the opening speeches, the Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, called for inequalities to be addressed and stressed the importance of including all children in quality education. The European Commissioner for Education, Tibor Navracsics, criticized the fact that the majority of Member States have reduced their education budgets. The Minister for Family Affairs and Integration, Corinne Cahen, stressed the importance of promoting diversity in schools.

    Presidency conference on

    On 10 and 11 September 2015, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU hosted a conference in Mondorf-les-Bains on "Working Conditions of Tomorrow". Bringing together experts, decision-makers and social partners from the EU, the conference was dedicated to two European social pillars: health and safety at work, and, more generally, working conditions.

    Xavier Bettel meets with Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of Holland, for talks devoted mainly to the

    On 9 September 2015, the Prime Minister, Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, hosted Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of Holland, on an official visit. The discussion mainly dealt with "the refugees problem" in Europe as well as ongoing work under the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which Holland will take over in the first half of 2016. Solidarity beyond Europe, the issue of quotas for relocating refugees within the EU, the list of safe countries common to all Member States and the central role of the Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in decision-making were covered.

    On the airwaves of Bel RTL and 100.7 fm, Xavier Bettel explained the mediating role which the Luxembourg Presidency wishes to play in the EU regarding the migration crisis

    In two interviews, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, set out the "mediating role" which Luxembourg, in its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, wishes to play in the EU which is faced with a huge influx of refugees, "people who are leaving everything behind in order to survive, and who are risking their lives to do so", as the Prime Minister pointed out. "Luxembourg is coordinating" the response to the situation; Luxembourg is seeking to "bring people together around the table" explained the Prime Minister.

    Official launch of the European Week of Sport in Brussels in the presence of the Minister of Sport, Romain Schneider

    Within the framework of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Minister of Sport, Romain Schneider, attended the official launch of the first European Week of Sport on 7 September 2015 in Brussels. The European Week of Sport aims to raise awareness and make information available to European citizens about the general lack of physical activity and to encourage participation in physical activity and/or sport during this European Week of Sport.

    Jean Asselborn calls for a European Asylum System and a specialised European jurisdiction to hear asylum cases

    In his speech to the European Union (EU) Ambassadors' Conference held on 3 September 2015 in Brussels, Luxembourg's Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, called for a European Asylum System. Although the current system has a "European focus", "national management risks leading to striking differences between the length of proceedings and the international protection recognition rate", he explained. In his capacity as Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn invited the Member States to "reconsider the logic of the system" at the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council on 14 September 2015. The EU needs a specialised European jurisdiction to hear cases on international protection, applying common rules concerning the length of proceedings and granting approvals, considered Jean Asselborn.

    On 3 and 4 September 2015, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU organized a conference in Echternach, entitled "Culture and development: towards a more strategic approach to cultural policies in the EU's external relations". The aim of the conference, which brought together around forty European and international speakers, was to give an insight into the way in which culture and development interact, and also to raise questions about the coherence of cultural policies and cooperation in development.

    Camille Gira calls for a new impetus to be given to cross-border cooperation before the Committee of the Regions

    Members of the Executive Bureau of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) met in Luxembourg on 2 September 2015 at the 162nd meeting of the Bureau committed mainly to cross-border cooperation. On this occasion, the Secretary of State for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Camille Gira, was invited to present the proposals of the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council, which has submitted an opinion request to the CoR on the need for a better regulatory framework for cross-border cooperation. The subject was then discussed at two round tables, the first committed to cross-border issues relating to EU policy and regulations, the second to investment and financing of cross-border projects.

    Crisis in the dairy sector – Fernand Etgen calls for

    On 1 September 2015, Fernand Etgen, the Luxembourg Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protections, who is currently chairing the EU's Agriculture Council, held a press conference following a meeting with dairy producers, farmers' unions and Luxembourg dairies. "We agree on the fact that several agricultural sectors are experiencing major difficulties", declared the Minister, in reference to the milk and pig-meat sectors. In order to tackle this crisis, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union has called an extraordinary meeting of the Agriculture Council which will be held on 7 September 2015. "A European solution is needed based on strong solidarity between States and between all European producers", explained the Minister.
