    On behalf of the Council, Fernand Etgen speaks before the European Parliament about the Commission's package of measures to help farming sectors in crisis

    On 16 September 2015, Fernand Etgen, Luxembourg's Minister for Agriculture, and President of the Agriculture Council, spoke on behalf of the European Council to MEPs sitting in plenary in Brussels, in a debate on the current crisis in the farming sector. Farmers are looking for "concrete responses" which "go beyond mere technical measures" and which "will ensure their sector remains viable", he said. During the debate, MEPs asked Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, for clarifications on the measures taken by the European executive to resolve the current crisis on the agricultural markets.

The agenda of the ministers meeting on Tuesday, 15 September will be “Evolution of the markets – further examination of the package”.

    Extraordinary Agriculture Council – Ministers 'satisfied' with the Commission's package of measures worth EUR 500 million in response to the worrying market situation in certain EU Member States, stressed Fernand Etgen

    European Ministers for Agriculture 'welcomed' the European Commission's package of measures in response to the slump in prices and income in the dairy and livestock sectors in certain Member States, at the extraordinary Agriculture Council held in Brussels on 7 September 2015. This meeting was convened by the Luxembourg Presidency in order to set out possible additional measures to address the worrying market situation in the short term. Fernand Etgen, Luxembourg's Minister for Agriculture and President of the Council, welcomed the European Commission's package of measures which will allow for EUR 500 million to be used for the benefit of farmers 'immediately'.

    Crisis in the dairy sector – Fernand Etgen calls for

    On 1 September 2015, Fernand Etgen, the Luxembourg Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protections, who is currently chairing the EU's Agriculture Council, held a press conference following a meeting with dairy producers, farmers' unions and Luxembourg dairies. "We agree on the fact that several agricultural sectors are experiencing major difficulties", declared the Minister, in reference to the milk and pig-meat sectors. In order to tackle this crisis, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union has called an extraordinary meeting of the Agriculture Council which will be held on 7 September 2015. "A European solution is needed based on strong solidarity between States and between all European producers", explained the Minister.
