    The Luxembourg Presidency is organising a conference on "EU Citizenship and Justice", on 14 and 15 September 2015. The meeting, which will be held at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), closes a round of conferences on the theme of the CJEU in the area of freedoms, security and justice organised by the Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg trio of Presidencies. Luxembourg's Minster for Justice, Félix Braz, spoke during the opening of the conference in Luxembourg, and stated his position on the refugee crisis.

    Conference on Early Childhood Education organised by the Luxembourg Presidency - Day 2 devoted to multilingualism, the role of parents and teachers' working conditions

    The Luxembourg Presidency organised a conference on Diversity and Multilingualism in Education and Early Childhood Care held on 10 and 11 September, 2015. Throughout the second day, there was a presentation of the results of several workshops, followed by a discussion with a panel of experts. Several topics were covered, such as the need to value and foster the mother tongue of children from migrant backgrounds, improving the working conditions of teachers, and even including parents more in their children's education.

    European Ministers of Economy and Financial Affairs met in Luxembourg on 11 September 2015 during the first day of the Informal Meeting of Ministers of Economy and Financial Affairs convened by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). On this occasion, the Ministers discussed the financing of the fight against climate change, just over two months before the Paris Climate Conference (COP21 ), the principle of minimum effective taxation and the financial impact of the refugee crisis currently facing the EU.

    The importance of quality education and equality of opportunities is at the heart of a conference on early childhood organised by the Luxembourg Presidency

    The Luxembourg Presidency organised a conference on Diversity and Multilingualism in Early Childhood Education and Care held on 10 and 11 September 2015. During the opening speeches, the Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, called for inequalities to be addressed and stressed the importance of including all children in quality education. The European Commissioner for Education, Tibor Navracsics, criticized the fact that the majority of Member States have reduced their education budgets. The Minister for Family Affairs and Integration, Corinne Cahen, stressed the importance of promoting diversity in schools.

    On 10 and 11 September 2015, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU hosted a conference in Mondorf-les-Bains on "Working Conditions of Tomorrow". Bringing together experts, decision-makers and social partners from the EU, the conference was dedicated to two European social pillars: health and safety at work, and, more generally, working conditions.

    State of the Union - Nicolas Schmit welcomes

    Nicolas Schmit, the Minister in charge of relations with the European Parliament during the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU, has welcomed the "important" contributions and initiatives put forward by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, during his speech on the state of the Union before the European Parliament which met in plenary session on 9 September 2015. "It is time for courageous, innovative and exceptional action to be taken", declared Nicolas Schmit, speaking at the end of the debate which followed Jean-Claude Juncker's speech. In his address, Jean-Claude Juncker called, in particular, on the 28 EU Member States to reach an agreement on the Commission's proposal on the urgent relocation of 160,000 refugees during the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council (JHA) convened by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU for 14 September 2015.

    Pierre Gramegna presented the position of the Council on the EU Budget 2016 to the European Parliament

    Minister for Finance and President of ECOFIN, Pierre Gramegna, attended the European Parliament plenary session meeting on 8 September 2015 in Strasbourg, to present the position of the Council on the draft EU Budget for 2016. The position, adopted by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Members States to the EU on the basis of a compromise agreement brokered by the Luxembourg Presidency on 9 July 2015 was unanimously approved by the Council on 4 September. Pierre Gramegna noted that although the EU Budget 2016 is intended to "reflect European solidarity, both within the Union, and beyond its borders", its main objective is to "support economic recovery, investment and boost employment, while stimulating the financing of migration policy and EU external action". The Council's position provides for EUR 153.27 billion in funding commitments and EUR 142.12 billion in payment allocations.
